Door hinge issue
Attempted to drive to work this morning… door wouldn’t close after I got into the car.
Fiddled around with the latch mechanism before I realised that there was a fair bit of play in the hinges. Is it possible to replace the pin in the top hinge (think this is where the play is) with the door in stiu? Bit annoyed as I had new hinges and pins fitted when I had a load of bodywork done on the car 3 years ago… mind you, with the quality of work the bodyshop did, it wouldn’t surprise me if they didn’t bother. If it’s necessary to remove the door and/or hinge, does anyone have any tips/hints/advice? Thanks in advance Mike Edit: forgot to mention, car is a 1970 133 2 door... it's been a stressful morning!! Hi Mike,
I dont think you will get to the hinge pin to hit it with the door in place, due to the top curve of the front wing. With the door open, grasp the door bottom outer corner and lift up, you will see any play in the hinge pins. I think it will be easier to change the full hinge rather than repair the existing. If you do go for it, mark around both hinges to help with refitting/ re aligning, place something like a thick towel on the sill top to protect your paintwork. You will need at least 2 people, 1 to hold, 1 to undo the fixings. good luck. |

Bite the bullet and remove the wing. Replace the complete hinge as said. Obviously more expensive than a new pin but it will be as new. You can dismantle the hinge to check which part is worn. It can be that only one of the two pieces has worn. Each part can be bought separately from Brookhouse. Use an impact driver on the screws if they don't respond to a big cross head screwdriver. The handheld ones you use with a heavy hammer work OK. The tommy bar in a 140 tool kit has the correct size for the screws and a removal tool with a big lever can be made up from one of those if you fancy a bit of DIY.
