Switching from 850 20v to S40 2litre
Hello All,
New member- have owned 7 Volvos including a very nice Laser Blue V70 R AWD - which ate tyres and shed alcantara.. Anyway, am switching from 96 model 850 2.5 20valve auto saloon to late 01 phase 2 S40 2litre non turbo -one owner with 78K and FVSH. 2 Questions - (1) What mpg at 65mph on a motorway run -will I get? Am hoping for 38mpg? (2) This model has 90 K cambelt chnage - how much will it cost -non Volvo delaer... Thanks |

I have a non-turbo 2.0 V40 and I get average of 34mpg with normal stop start. In the past I have managed to get 42mpg when trundling around on holiday, but 36 to 38 mpg should be possible with decent driving. I have just done my own cambelt and the kit with pulleys, tensioner and belt was going to cost £114. The belt only cost £29. As for the cost from a garage, I think around £200 - £250. Just a guess.

I enquired about a cambelt change before buying mine and was told £365 (by my local Dealer mind). I suspect you could knock and easy £100 of that at an independant

I have run both cars at the same time until recently and I have sold the V40. The fuel consumption difference over a week of everyday driving was around 2 mpg! The 850 is quicker, quieter and far more practical for my needs. Don't get me wrong the V40 is a nice car but whoever designed it as an estate wants shooting

850- V40 switch
Thanks for this folks. I have to say the V40 is not as comfy as the 850 and the fuel saving is suprisingly minimal.
Nevertheless -Does anyone want an 850 2.5 20V auto SALOON cheap? Need the space... It's 95 on an N with 88K on the clock- with full VSH to support plus MOTS. Had the cambelt service at Volvo 10K ago. Newish tyres. Goes very smoothly on Sport as well as Econ auto box setting. Needs brakes pads and and oil and filter. Used daily. Never ever let me down. Runs to Cornwall every 6 weeks. New battery.Very Clean cabin, some exterior scratches. Located North Wiltshire |
