Default oil warning light on

last night on my way home I hit a stone that at the time i didn't know had cracked the oil sump. I left the car parked for 3 hours, then started it up and drive 300-400 meters before noticing the oil light was still on. Should I be worried, the light did go out when the car was on level ground.

The insurance company are going to handle the repair, but what about engine damage ?

thanks

Hi,

You may well have got away with no damage to the engine following a 400 yard drive.

However, given that the damage to the engine is a direct consequence of the stone damage to the sump you should therefore be covered by the insurance you are claiming on..

Thanks, that is what I was hoping, especially as it's diesel, but concerned that the repair company may not think about checking, and then a problem appears in the future which can be attributed to this. I know the repair is covered by a 3 year guarantee, but they would work out of this at a later date.

When they come and collect the car later today or monday, I'll inform them that I drove the car without knowing there was no oil in it.

Getting a claim form from the council as well, hopefully they'll pay the excess on the premium.
