Default 440 Wipers in perpetual motion!

My daughters 1995 1.9 Diesel 440 has a problem with the wipers, they are in perpetual motion.
That is, they work when the ignition is switched on, regardless of switch position, the washer pump runs also. I have changed the switch on the steering column for another.
At the wiper motor I find there is battery current at four of the five terminals.
Where are the timers and the relays for this system?
Are some of the relays also timers?
Can anyone help?
Are Haynes correct in calling their diagrams wiring?
Many thanks, Ed

Hi,

What's the betting that you have the headlamp wash/wipe system?

You are likely to find that if you disconnect the supply to the headlamp wiper motor that is nearest/underneath the washer bottle your problem will be over.
You could disconnect both for the time being...

Have a look in the 800/70 tech section as a writ-up of the process of fixing the motor has been done (by Jod I believe)...

Des. . .

Thanks for that Des, your advice was spot on. I had almost given up hope and sent it to the garage. My subscription paid for itself within 24hrs of rejoining.

I just wanted to say thanks to the Volvo Owners' Club and particularly Des because you just saved me a lot of time and agro with my sister's 460.

It's a 1995 car which had the same problem and I never would have thought of unplugging the headlamp wiper motors to fix the perpetual windscreen wiping issue.

Just in case anyone else uses this thread to fix their car - on my sister's 460 the multi-plugs for the two headlamp wiper motors are mounted horizontally on the panel behind the headlamps - you can just unplug them.

Happy Volvoing everyone!

PS my dad had a 360 GLT when I was a small chap - bloody awesome motor ;-) I'm a fan!

Intresting read! Our 850 estate had the same fault earler this year and like most I suspected the switch had stuck on. This was checked along with the relays and I eventualy as a last resort unplugged the headlight wipers. Fault cured although I now have no airbags as I accidently disturbed the wiring when checking the wiper switch.
