I will now be servicing my car after the poor, rushed serviced received at two main dealers. A few gearbox issues they couldn't diagnose after I repeatedly asked for the oil to be changed through warranty. All the adaptations were ineffective.
Out of warranty I've now changed the oil myself in the gearbox (TF-80SC) and she purrs like a swedish kitten. Such great cars, however the service I received was simply dreadful. With exception of the parts department. |

Why is there no poll option of service car yourself?
Always service my 2012 XC60 D5 myself. Initialy changed every single fluid in the vehicle when i bought it at 45K including auto gearbox , Haldex , diffs , coolant , aux belt etc. Now covered 77k and no problems. I will not let any main dealer touch my car after several bad experiences eg. being invoiced for a diesel filter and they didn't change it. Although i find the Volvo parts dept. to be very helpfull and ofter give a small discount. Last edited by ianrmz250; Nov 11th, 2019 at 21:48. |

Always service my own cars, always fix myself. In 27 years, nothing has beaten me. Early days Haynes manuals, recently YouTube. It was a driver requirement in the Army to do normal servicing, so a basic mentality that was what I should do with my own cars.
Much easier on later cars doing basic fluid and filter changes every 18,000 miles. The MGC required valve clearances, timing, what seemed like hundreds of grease nipples, carb balancing etc. |

Got my XC60 in mid-August - 2011 2.0 2WD model. Having seen the service schedule information on the web I will be servicing it myself, with anything I don't have time or inclination to do (or needs something specialist attention) carried out by a Volvo specialist (I've had them change the ATF already). I just had the maps and software updated by my local Volvo dealer from what looks like the 2012 maps; however, they installed the 2016 maps not the 2018 ones. Fortunately, the software was upgraded so I can actually upgrade the maps myself now. I rarely use main dealers for my daily car servicing because I think they are poor value - and this recent experience reinforces that opinion. My wife has a new Fiat in warranty so I have bought the service plan for that because it makes sense to do so - but on my 9 year old car it's just not worth it, especially when you see what's actually involved.

I paid £262 for a service including MOT at an Independent Volvo Specialist. So I had the oil changed, a new oil filter, pollen filter, diagnostics print-out, MOT & a wash. The total labour cost was £62.50, the rest was parts etc.
I don't think that's too bad to be honest, but the car is now 13 years old & has full service history. For future maintenance, part of me is thinking its best to keep it serviced at a Volvo Specialist to keep the history, but I know its not going to be worth much more than if it had hardly any history come sale time! I'm swaying in both directions on it to be honest. Do you actually need Vida/Dice to turn off the service lights on these vehicles? I know the dipstick needs to be filled to approx 3/4, but its easier to measure the actual oil level with Vida I presume. How do you measure the oil level if you're DIY servicing without any software that these garages use? I've done lots of other work to the car myself, like new discs & pads all around, aux belts & tensioner to name a few... I just haven't changed the oil in case I get overfill warnings!

I've never owned a Volvo that's new enough to take to a dealership for servicing.
Instead, I use my local Volvo specialist - Horton Cars - and they look after things very nicely. As a family, we've also purchased six Volvos from them, and they've all been good, reliable cars. I will, however, have to drive the 21 miles to my nearest Volvo dealer at some point in order to get a software update done on my 2015 MY V70 D4 as part of a recent recall. Other than that, it's Horton Cars for me. |
