Default GT steering wheel horn push alternative, almost.

I don't think I've seen this mentioned anywhere, it could be useful to someone.

I picked up a GT steering wheel without a horn push fairly cheaply from ebay. I like the three spoke design but I'm not building a GT clone so I've never intended to pay the astronomical prices a horn push/complete wheel can fetch.

I got the centre for a Volvo F88 wheel for a tenner thinking it looked about right and I could fiddle with it until it fitted. It's actually made by the same company who made the GT wheel and they seem to have used the same basic pattern so it clips into the wheel ok, the horn spring from the centre makes contact with the wheel ok. The bezel is slightly larger than the GT wheel (~2mm dia.) and the chamfered lip on the wheel prevents a tight fit.

These photos are of it just pushed on roughly. It's difficult enough to remove that I'd be happy driving with it. A bit of fiddling and it should look ok.

(p.s. I'm looking for a spare plastic collar from behind the steering wheel )

That looks great! IS the GT wheel a lot smaller in diameter?

No the rim diameter and profiles of the two wheels are almost identical. The main difference I noticed is that the GT wheel positions the rim about 10mm closer to the dashboard.

I like the GT wheels also but I still reckon the original normal steering wheel is way cooler...

I know some will return my comment with "well you shouldn't be driving a '60's car if that concerns you", but I had the opportunity of changing mine to a GT steering wheel a while ago. However, when I compared what my swede-head could be smacking against, I chose to stay with the standard (just my personal choice)

All said, that wheel looks very, very nice AND I like the fact that it is 10mm further away

Go on then - who made the 123GT steering wheels?

I had a theory it might be Nardi, but I'm probably wrong.

I've got a resplined 60's Nardi ready to go on my car - when I get the project going again..............

I have absolutely no idea But the wheel and the F88 centre have the same logo cast into them. The centre has 'MADE IN GERMANY-WEST' in addition to that. There's a strong chance the photo's upside down and it should look more like a 'd' than a 'p', but don't let my pareidolia bias you.

Nice looking Nardi btw...

For those of you looking for a GT horn push I have just received a fantastic replacement one from George Minassian in Australia. Cost me 210 Australian dollars so not cheap but looks the real deal, it even comes in its own little pouch! He has only commissioned a certain number but worth contacting him if anyone really wants one.
