XC60 2012 Internal rearview mirror sensor
Just noticed on my car that the interior rearview mirror has had the front facing light sensor clear lens taped over!
I have remove the tape! Anyone an idea why it would be covered over in the first place? Regards |

I think it would make the mirror more likely to activate the auto-dimming, so perhaps someone wanted the mirror perminantly dim?

Would the auto dimming sensor be on the front face of the rv mirror, surely any dimming needs to be sensed from the rear? Just a thought!

Maybe he means front facing him as he is sat in the drivers seat.

The mirror works by measuring the ratio of the light coming into the mirror vs the light coming into the windscreen, if the light in the mirror is bright compared to the windscreen it dims.
So covering the windscreen side would make it dim more, covering the cabin side would make it dim less. |

And there's me thinking it was anti-dazzle from headlights behind.

It is - if the headlights shining into the mirror are bright compared to the ambient light (measured in front of the mirror) it dims for you.

That makes sense then. The previous owner covered the ambient light sensor facing the windscreen to inhibit the dimming process due to the R design already having tinted rear windows. I will see for myself in good time. I might even decide to recover the front facing sensor myself😳 regards

Automatic dimming
The rearview mirror contains two sensors - one forward facing and one rearward facing - that work together to identify and eliminate dazzling light. The forward facing sensor detects ambient light, while the rearward facing sensor detects the light from vehicle headlights behind. Found this 😊
