Unhappy Daft mot advisory

My S40 passed the mot test yesterday and the tester commented that the car was in pristine condition for it's age. Nice comment but an advisory was issued
saying " vehicle underside wet at time of test "
Of course it was, we have had a week of snow here. Daft or what?

totally a shot in the dark here as i havent actually owned a car yet and have no clue how the mot process works

is it possible he commented that incase you were trying to hide something by washing it away, like leaking fluids?

It does make one wonder what the rules are governing advisories - or are they purely down to the Tester's discretion?

Some can be helpful, but as you already knew that the underside was wet, I agree with you - what was the point of recording the fact?

Regards. John.

Presumably it gives them an out if a problem is found later on? When I returned my last lease car the person checking simply wrote rain/ wet on the form, he didn't bother looking it over. I asked why and he said the rain can hide dents, scratches, paint issues. I presume it is a light and refraction thing.

Advisories are at the testers discretion as is the rest of the MOT - all down to his interpretation of the rules.

I took 'er indoors Mini Cooper for its test a few weeks ago and the three mile journey to the test station was in torrential rain. The tester put his cagoule on when he was underneath as there was so much water dripping off. No advisory, the only comment made was from me to him commenting on the fact it was not very nice working under a wet car.

The same chappie has been testing my cars for the last twenty years and I know he has a fetish about flexible brake hoses and ball joint rubber boots, so I always double check all of those before the test.

Basically he was covering his back[and who can blame him?]in case any fluid leaks are discovered in the near future which could have been present when the test was done and may have led to a failure as opposed to a pass.

What utter tosh..... Take it back when it’s dry and ask him to change the advisory to Too Dry instead.

MOT on my landroved had the advisory, underside covered in paint/underseal.

I know it is sound under the underseal, in the past the examiner would of been able to tap with a hammer to establish that fact, they are now only allowed to press with a plastic tool. When it's his livelihood why would he take my word for it that I had not undersealed over cracks and corrosion in the chassis? I know I have not but I would say that wouldn't I.

In this litigious society all are forced to cover their backs, MOT inspectors are highly regulated and the costs of answering a complaint wether proven or not are huge. They get a summons to attend with their solicitor at a given time and place. Loss of earnings, pay for solicitors time and travel are the least of it.
Lad I took my car to for many years had such an occurrence, tyres not up to legal standard was the complaint, turned out the owner was selling the car and fitted borrowed wheels and tyres for the MOT then changed to the illegal tyres to sell it. With customers like that why take the risk, put an advisory that forstalls any investigation which one way or another you will pay for.

Paul.

Default Daft MOT comments

Took my diesel in for an MOT, bearing in mind it only does long journeys (Salisbury to Manchester return weekly) and the advisory stated emissions were to low ie to clean..... I thought that was a good thing....

Absolutely shocking, how dare you have a car with low emissions.....
