T8 battery technology
Has anyone heard, given the rapid advances in battery technology, whether Volvo will be able to extend the mileage when in EV/Hybrid mode on the XC90, 60 etc in the near/medium future?
Furthermore will T8 owners be able to swap out legacy batteries in the future, for more powerful ones? |

They might be able to, although looking at the battery size relative to its capacity I'd suggest that they've chosen pretty up-to-date tech already. I'm sure as time goes on that the PHEV battery capacities will increase, until they turn into REx BEVs instead of PHEVs.
As for swapping, it would be technically feasible - Early Nissan Leaf can be updated with the newer "lizard" chemistry pack, although nissan have never offered a pack capacity upgrade (eg putting a 30kWh pack into an originally 24kWh car). However, it is highly unlikely that they would ever offer this as an option. Take up would be very low because anyone prepared to spend IRO £3-£5k to update the battery in the vehicle is distinctly more likely to take out a new lease on a brand new vehicle that comes with the updated battery. Volvo makes more money from shifting new vehicles than supporting old ones so there's nothing it for them. |
