850R vs V70R P1 Fwd
Any views on what is the better car?
Anyone owned both that could give me a unbiased opinion. Would be interesting to find out. Thanks |

Previously owned an 850 T5 and a V70R FWD. Both great cars.
The annoying feature of the V70R was the reprogramming of power feed in from a standing start. A number of times I pushed the load pedal at a roundabout intersection and had to seemingly wait a lifetime for the speed to build. Whereas the 850 was a case of hanging onto the steering wheel as the car took off. The 850 has more raw performance in my opinion - and being the first, the better investment. Although probably best to buy either on mileage and condition. |

That’s the second time I’ve heard the 850R described as being more “raw” which I also like in my 850R.Although you can forget about giving it full revs in the first 3 gears under harsh acceleration,you just get massive wheel spin,If accelerate progressively it fine though(as we all do 😉.
I think a remap would change the characteristics of V70R to something less idle,unless you had a massive turbo and no remap to compensate along with the supporting mods. |

Another vote for a more raw feel, I have a C70 T5 and an 850 T5, I just don't like the electronic feel of the c70.

id take a V70R mk1 ph1 all day over an 850R from a drivers perspective
far better looking, better management system (4.4), better interior, better front seats with more bolster, no rattles like all 850s, better speakers, better colour options except gay gold (opinion), better fuel system design and more wheelarch clearance for wheel options/lowering. im sure theres more pros for the 70 too. The 850R just rides on the coattails of the T-5Rs success and frankly doesnt do it for me.

Oh no more snobbery over the T-5R and the R, love them both in equal measure, although prefer the interior of the R. That said I don't think the R did a bad job of hanging on the coat tails, went to a show last year and a guy with a gul refused to acknowledge us in R (grow up) which I did actually tell him.
The V70R should be a better car, volvo had the opportunity to iron out all the issues with the 850 and develop and much more sorted package. |

I find that really strange how a fellow Volvo owner with a very similar car can be hating on another owner as they have a lesser model(in their eyes).
Let’s get it in perspective they are 5-10grand cars,not Ferrari’s or Bentleys. Not sports cars. I love them but I’d love other cars a lot more if I had the money,as anybody would if they are being truly honest. Anyway that aside,I’m going to get a V70R and decide for myself. And it will be gay gold too. |

Couldn't agree more, the 850 series was ground breaking in every sense of the word and a fantastic car, with sympathetic mods can be improved and be an ever better machine.
If we could afford a Gul and P1 R then we would, saffron is imo one of the best colours, marmite I guess but still stunning |

Oh and I should have said ;
I love the T5 and the R in equal measure My Mrs hates the R and loves the T5. As an indication of where our marriage is going I have just removed her as a named driver ( which of course dopey has paid for every year for the past 20 ) on both. I sense that at least that argument is over. |
