Angry V50 Key Error

have a V50 D5, 11 1/2 yrs old only done 120k and I have an error code reading:

KEY ERROR
TRY AGAIN.

and i can't start the car.

The car locks and unlocks fine so a signal is getting to the car but when i insert the key the error message appears with the (i) warning also illuminating.

I've changed the battery on both key fobs this morning and makes no difference.

There can be issues with the receiver around the ignition barrel, it sounds like it's not reading the key.
My friends car had this fail and I'm afraid it was a dealer only fix.
I would get the codes read first with VIDA and that will narrow the fault down.

Terry.

Hi

Normally the ignition switch, no coding required just a replacement.
On mine, i changed the ignition key unit. there have been loads of problems and i think volvo are on the 3rd or 4th version of the unit.

A sharp bang on the dash next to the key switch sorted mine temporarily.

Yeah, it’s a known with V50 and S40. I had it with my V50, I got the dealer to replace the ignition switch for me.

Key with the head of a screwdriver I have never had a problem again
That was two years ago
