Fitted a pair of Delphi links (oddly they were cheaper) and no problems since. Spaceship bushes are more correctly called lower arm to tie bar bushes. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-740...t/293040120883 You'll find the tie-rod between the lower arm and chassis running backwards from the lower arm at about 45 degrees, item 9 is the tie-rod, 11 is the bush : A photo of the L/H control arm, tie rod etc on a left hand drive to give things a bit of reality : Finally, the all important torque figures : Note you may have to re-tighten the front bolt through the spaceships as it seems to have a habit of settling.

Thanks Dave, building a picture up of what needs to be next and what parts to order. Are there two of these bushes per tie rod end, I noticed another bush at the rear without a number ??
Just done the speed bump test and had no clunks or clicks. Last edited by besidetheseaside; May 15th, 2019 at 14:07. |

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-740...t/293040120883 Just had a look on fleabay, can't find a better price at the moment, when i got mine there was a listing for 4 bushes, 2 bolts etc in other words enough to do both and i think i got it for about a tenner - "NOS" New Old Stock which is always a bonus. Can't find any of those either!

Sounds liek you and Mark have got your spaceships sorted Don!
Once you've fitted them, have the engine idling and sitting in the driving seat with the steering wheels main spokes level (straight ahead position), turn it slowly to full lock, counting the turns. It should be 1.75 turns so if you turned to the right lock, the right hand level spoke when straight ahead should now point straight down. Likewise with the left lock. This ensures that when the rack is in the central position, the steering wheel "agrees" that it should be aiming the car straight. If all is good, check/have checked the front wheel alignment/tracking as it will almost certainly be out if the spaceships were worn. You'll be surprised how much difference this procedure makes! If for whatever reason the steering wheel doesn't "agree" with the straight ahead position when the rack is central, i.e. 1.75 turns from each lock, you'll have to remove the steering wheel and reposition it on the column. I expect you have an IED (airbag) so take the necessary precautions when removing this so it doesn't blow up in your face! Once you've repositioned the wheel if necessary, re-check the central position of the rack agrees with the wheel in the straigh ahead position, if so, disconnect the battery and wait half hour again (precaution against accidental deployment of IED/Airnag) then check tighten the nut on the wheel and refit the IED and then do the tracking.

Right, Phase 2,
I was not happy with the fitting of the new centre bearing, driveline roughness confirmed my fears that something was not right. The one I fitted came as a separate carrier and bearing ( I bought this before seeing Daves suggestion to buy one complete ) so I ordered a complete new one and fitted it today. On stripping we noticed that there was a rough spot although when we removed the bearing from the housing the roughness had gone so I can only put it down to the bearing being slightly twisted ie poor fitting So lets chalk that down to experience and crack on. I utilised the old bearing inner race (see pic) to use as a drift after cutting a slot in it and taking 0.1mm off the inner diameter. Tapped the new bearing on and got a perfect fit on the prop with no roughness, refitted it, started the car on the ramp, put it in gear and run it for a few seconds before tightening it up and test driving, this time it was perfect. Happy bunny. |
