Intermittent engine cut out
Morning Gents,
My Parents V70 03 2.4 Petrol occasionally cuts out whilst driving. More often than not on a corner but there is no hard and fast rule for when. It starts immediately but is quite dangerous as you lose brakes and steering assistance!! I am reading that fuel pump relays are a common issue and maybe also the pump itself. Your thoughts please? |

You really need to get your fault codes read to see what the underlying cause is.

Does it have to go to Volvo for that?

Codes from where?
Hi, I have a V70 SE 2003 plate (Petrol & Automatic) and i’m getting an intermittent engine cut out, when i’m gently decelerating, often on a slight decline. All the engine lights come on and once i’ve Stopped, put it in ‘Park’, it starts fine.
I’m waiting on a Foxwell NT614 to be delivered and hopefully i’ll see some stored codes. Where did you get your codes from and did you get the problem diagnosed or fixed? |

Cleaned & Checked
I've got no codes showing on my Foxwell NT614 ODB2 Fault Scanner
I've cleaned the throttle body (recommended on another thread) but there didn't seem to be too much dirt/gunck on the lower edge where the valve closes. I really don't think that this was the issue as I've never had problems on pick up (i.e. acceleration requiring the throttle to open for the air intake to increase) and the car idles well; but then you never know! Also located the CEM under the steering wheel on the drivers side (RHD car). This has also been suggested as a problem if there has ever been water ingress due to sunroof drains being blocked. The Driver's side on my RHD Volvo has never had water ingress and/or pools of water on the driver's footwell (It has happened twice on the passenger side). The CEM was dry as a bone, with a few cobwebs too! I also took out the two relays (Ref# 9441161) pictured in the CEM above, checked the contacts and re-seated. These were also quoted as possible suspects on other forum threads. In my case, no issue from the CEM as far as I can see: I've driven the car on a few short journeys (5-10 miles) and all seems fine; but of course, this is an intermittent fault! Mileage circa 68,750 miles so let's see when it re-occurs |

No Re-occurrence So Far
I've done a good couple of thousand miles since the last post, including a road trip to Austria & back (Skiing) and had no issues.
Just before the last post, I did replace the car battery as it was on the way out and let me down. I did originally think the starter motor was faulty so I reconditioned it (new brushes) and also swapped it for a known good starter Motor (also with new brushes), but it did turn out to be the battery. So perhaps, as the battery wasn't in very good condition when I experience the problem, this may have contributed to the engine cut out? I'd be surprised as there were not battery related warning lights coming on (on their own) and the alternator is still charging the battery (but the battery wasn't holding it for long). Anyway, no definitive fix; accepting I've tinkered with the starter motor and replaced the battery! |
