Ok im trying to sort the starting issues first and then i shall tackle the chugging at low RPM. Do you have any thought on what could be causing the bad starts?? also would turning the key a few time before it actually starts cause it to smoke, someone said to me it is unhurt diesel?? I'm so useless with cars especially the understanding side of it.

VIDA stands for "Vehicle Information and Diagnostics for Aftersales"

its the Software Volvo use to talk to the car, find out any fault codes, program keys and add option parts (tow bar, fog lights etc) to the car,
it also has a Full workshop manual in it,
so if the car says "fault code XXXXX" you click it, and it takes you step by step through finding Exactly whats wrong And then replacing it,

(think haynes book,, without the errors omissions and getting it wrong)

it Uses a "DiCE " (DiCE - Diagnostic Communication Equipment) unit to connect between the computer with ViDA on and the car.

usually found at volvo main dealers , certain Volvo specialists / independents

(or you can by clone/copys of the dice box and find the software on the internet)

Afternoon all, so after many trips to the garage my car is still none the wiser so I am going to take CLANS advise and sort the throttle body flap out after repeatedly asking the garage to look at it and none of them doing anything just saying nah it won't be that!!!
so could anyone tell me where my throttle body flap is....
Volvo v50 Rdesign 2009.... engine is a D4204T.

Wow that's the same engine as mine! I'm guessing the the bottom red circle is the throttle body?? and the silver tube needs to be removed to access??

You don’t need to worry about the silver tube. The throttle body is the bit in the middle of the blue circle. You’ll need a torx key set, screw driver set, old tooth brush, carb cleaner, sand paper or emery cloth. Remove the engine cover, vacuum pipe, pop the plug off, remove the induction pipe, undo the three torx bolts and the body will come away from the inlet manifold. Undo the bolt that holds the sensor and pull it out, it will resist a little but it’ll come out?

Now you’ve got the body out push the flap open and spray it with carb cleaner, loosen up any stubborn carbon and oil off the flap and sides of the housing and repeat till clean. Let it dry out.

Push the flap open again and get some fine sand paper or emery and sand down the edges of the flap carefully so your giving it a bit more tolerance. I shined a torch into it with the flap closed and took enough off the flap so I had a slight halo of light between the flap and sides of the housing. Clean any residue from the sand paper out of the housing and then rebuild.

Make sure you don’t overtighten the hose clips otherwise you can distort the housing which will cause it to jam again.

If the issue doesn’t go away, then it’s back to the drawing board.

I haven’t done one of these for three years but it’s pretty self explanatory once you see how it’s held on.

Good luck.

So done the throttle body and shaved the flap. all back together and I will admit it does tend to start a little better than before (now only takes 2-3 gets to start) but it still smokes like a trooper!! any ideas on what else it could be gentlemen?? it's white smoke that comes out of the exhaust and it comes in masses when it starts as soon as the cars been driven a bit it stops and doesn't smoke it just needs to get warm?? could it be oil getting in somewhere?? fuel in somewhere?? fuel pressure?? thin oil?? I'm just clutching at strings now as I feel like I'm getting to the end of the road with this car.... All help and thoughts are much appreciated...

P.S. I have All ready changed the following; glow plugs(inc fuse, relay) starter motor - 3 injectors - egr complete - throttle body flap(shaved, cleaned) - fuel filter (twice cause of air bubbles)

Thanks in advance.....Rich.

are you sure that throttle is not still sticking? try taking off the vacuum pipe from the throttle actuator on the side of the throttle for a day or two and see how it starts .. Is the air filter ok?
