I don’t think so as the one i used fitted into the top of the expansion tank and had a a special liquid in part of it that the hot gases passed through, any combustion gases caused the liquid to change colour.

Hi, used the tester today and confirms that exhaust gases are entering the waterways, so minimum head gasket.. let's hope head is not cracked.

Thanks again for your advice Owen.

My issue now is that my local indie is leaving on Friday so need to find an alternative garage to sort.

That is great info - I didn't even know about these testers.

Cheers

I just put this on the other coolant leak thread-

Just a quick bit of advice on finding coolant leaks. Try looking when it is dark/dusk or even in a dimly lit garage. When you use a torch in these badly lit conditions the light reflects off the steam and the leak/steam shows up far more clearly. Get the car very hot and check all around the engine bay shining the light from different directions. good to have a mate help who looks from a different direction too. Also check in the cabin as near the heater element as you can to see if its leaking(remember to have heater on hot to make sure water is flowing through it.)

Water flows through the XC90 cabin heat exchanger all the time.

The temperature regulators control airflow, not water flow.

Car booked in for Tues next at a garage specialising in head gasket replacement. I have a second hand head standing by in case head is damaged.

Thanks for all the advice.

Wish me luck...
