Hi Gents,

i'm in the market for a set of new boots for the XC70 P2. I've been looking at these:

anyone running these?

I don't commute in my car (i'm one of them bl**dy bicyclists) but i use it for road tripping, camping and just days out, so I don't really go offroading but i don't want to get stuck on a grass campsite after a nights rain.

Not running these currently but had them on a jeep A while back, they’re a bit noisy for day to day but if you’re only using the car occasionally you should be fine. Bit ‘Screechy’ on tight bends on the YJ but that’s more to do with the diff I think.

They are a H speed rating, volvos recomendation is V speed rating. Your insurance may quibble in the event of a claim.

I'm running pirreli scorpion all season that I paid £85+vat for 4 years ago, don't do many miles, that have a chunky tread that would handle wet grass and are V rated.

Landrover is used as designed and the only tyre I use is BF Goodrich AT but the landrover doesnot have a V speed rating requirement having a top speed of 92 mph compared to the xc70 136mph.

Thanks for the advice, didn't realise about the speed rating. i'm not going to be tackling green lanes with it or anything like that mostly just grass, gravel roads etc when required but 99% road so i'll keep looking.

BF Goodrich AT are the best tyre for all terrain but overkill for the XC

H rated tyres are correct for the P2 XC70 with 16 inch wheels, per OPs signature & pic. It's a shame that the OEM Pirelli Scorpion STRs are no longer available.

Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season used to be factory fitted to XC70 iirc. They are very good on XC70 imho.

yeah i did look at the pirelli ones and the garage i take my car to also recommended them, but i've also heard some bad press about them on here too so a bit torn.

i think i'm going to go with a more all weather tyre rather than the more off road looking tyre as i'm not off roading might look a bit too much. so i'm considering these three:

i'm liking the look of the continentals, the michelins seem a bit expensive tbh, and pirelli are an option but keen to hear any opinion of people that have ran them as i think i read they're not as good as they used to be but i could be wrong

A very personal experience IMHO, one person's sticky rubber will be another's ice skate.

I run Pirelli Scorpion Verde all season tyres. I tow a 1500kg onto nice and wet grass camp fields, in fact I write this from such a place. I have never been stuck. In snow I have pulled away from a standing start on a steep hill after some urbanite in a Range Rover Evoque had ground to a slithery halt on their 20" pimp my ride 40 series summer tyres.

I can get significant understeer on a greasy roundabout/junction if I am over exuberant with warp speed pedal but then I know its a heavy reasonably powered car.

Wear is reasonable. 22k miles 4mm left. That said I rotate every 6k miles.

Noise. They are quieter than the Continentals they replaced but they are not overly quiet. They tow better than the Continental tyres. They don't lose their balance as quick as the Continentals.

I'm a big fan of using what the car was sent off the factory line with/tested with and both Pirelli and Continental were used for my XC70 but the Pirelli fits my needs.

As a suggestion for your continued research, a tyre that does not get spoken of too often is the Goodyear Efficient Grip. A good sticky tyre. I use vehicles at work with said tyre in a response capacity. A good tyre indeed.

thanks everyone thats commented, its interesting that the pirelli's so far have got three good comments plus my garage also recommended, not sure where the bad press i was thinking of was coming from or whether it was a different tyre than the xc70 all season tyre that was getting rubbish reviews.

its going to be a month before i pull the trigger as i've got a holiday and a lengthy business trip this month not going to be in the country much, then my mot is due in october so when i get back will be looking to get the mot done and tyres at the same time.

+1 for the Pirelli Scorpions. They were fitted to my XC70 when I bought it second hand at 27K miles and I've changed the front pair at about 50K miles and the rears still look good. Don't know if they were originals or if and when the previous owner fitted them. Grip seems good wet and dry, hot and cold. All purpose tyres don't do everything exceptionally well but the Scorpions don't do anything at all badly so they seem a good choice to me.
