I have a nagging suspicion that the Renault will come out on top with regards to the occupants but will be totalled in the process and then they will herald the NCAP 5* for the way car design has improved over the last few years. If the Volvo was the winner they wouldn't show it because they can't be seen to give creedence to gas guzzling old bricks of motors.

Regardless I wouldn't be seen dead in a Renault cause they're crap cars (speaking from personal experience) plus people get out of your way if your in a Volvo where as they use French motors as target practice.

P.s that Veyron was very impressive on the track and I still prefer TopGear for the laugh factor.

Agreed. They also have the advertising revenues to consider, so no way is a 15 year old car (irrelevant of model) going to be allowed to come out on top over a product which they can sell advertising space for.

However what I would like to see is a proper recreation of their Volvo 940 vs BMW 5 Series crash test, but with new models, as a comparison. Given the speed of the cars (let alone the combined speed), my money is on there being little difference in passenger survival.....

Hi

That's the whole principle unless i missing something ,there is little point in the car being in one piece (a Volvo probably will be!), if the driver has caved in his chest on the steering wheel and smashed his hips on the dash.

I'd like to know how a more recent model like a V70 would fair.Having the safety features to prevent the deceleration injuries and mass.

Cheers

Steve

It does make you think TBH,i saw the start of the test last night when shown on fifth gear and it was stopped just as they hit.I travel loads of miles every year and have seen many nasty accidents where little cars have been totally destroyed, especially if hit and spun or hit from behind.
Remember the episode of Traffic Cops when the man in the 7.5 tonner hit and squashed the (peugeot,i believe) and though he had hit the car in front as the pug was under the lorry.
Im sure the tank will hold up better but as has been said,no airbags could result in injuries and the modus will crumple.
I recently saw on the M25 a Volvo S60 had been hit up the chuff by a 44 tonner, the bumper was hanging off,the boot slightly crumpled and the lorry had some damage also.I just think these tanks are safer, especially from behind, look at how much room there is between the boot and the rear seat in the modus and the volvo estate.I know which one i would rather have my daughters sitting in and that is why we have a Volvo.

Ben.
Totally with you there. I hate the "smaller" cars for this very reason.

I also don't like sitting close to the windscreen or indeed the front bumper.

Having that greater distance/crumple zone gives me much more confidence, but I agree with what's been said, it's who actually comes out alive with this test, bot which car has the least damage.

I also think the Volvo damage wise will look nothing compared to the Renault, but the "dummy" of the Renault will survive where as the volvo "dummy" will not having hit the steering wheel and breaking their neck etc.

Trouble is here though most accidents arn't head on, majority are rear impacts and side impacts.

hi

fifth gear is on a commercial station so like many car mags is in the pockets of certain manufacturers. They wouldnt have set this up if the volvo totalled the modus... its a setup by renault to show they are safer than volvo.

renault design their cars to pass the NCAP tests, volvo safety centre team has been at great pains to say that volvo tests for more comprehensively so one crash or two tests doesnt tell the whole story.

look how badly renault did in recent "new" non NCAP whiplash tests and rear shunts...

I don't watch blokey car programmes (apart from to catch a look at the gorgeous Richard Hamilton - doesn't he look like David Tenant?!). But this sounds like fun What time is it on & which channel please?
