Default Oh for gods sake, another problem!

This S40 is doing my head and wallet in now. Damn thing continues to disintegrate. Yesterday I put the key in and it popped up on the display 'Steering Failure System Service' and yup, you guessed it, it wouldn't unlock the steering wheel.

I'm waiting for the car to be recovered and I'm actually using a hire car (a diesel Insignia; I'll have my Volvo thanks even with the faults!) as I can't borrow one! Any thoughts/experience of this fault and how many less vital organs I might need to sell to fix it? Ta muchly

That's not too drastic then. Thanks for the heads up. You don't remember what the actual fault was by any chance or was it just a software glitch? Ta

I got the same error message but rather than not unlock it wouldn't lock, if it knows there's a problem with the steering it won't let the car start because for safety reasons.
