Hello - new to volvo ownership

Hi,

Yesterday I bought my first Volvo, a 99V tdi XT. Thanks to those who answered my questions while I was looking.

So a couple more questions now that I have found :-)

This car has 83K on it and has the service light on - so due the big service, as I understand it Timing belt & tensioner, pump belt. Anything else I should get done besides normal service items at this age / mileage ? My brother is an audi/VW specialist and will be doing the servicing for me, so a copy of Vadis needs to be bought.

The dual climate seems to work OK, although driving down from Scotland overnight needed heating not cooling, foul weather and lots of lazy lorries (lying down for a rest on the motorways and A66)

can someone point me at the instructions / circuit diagram for the led fault code reader ? I assume this is not OBD2 compliant - or is it ?

As to VOC what discounts do I get from Volvo, I have heard different stories about what parts are included, but I need a dog guard pdq.

Im sure I will have more questions

welcome to Volvo ownership.

Membership of VOC is worth it's weight in gold (although how you would weigh something as nebulous as club membership... :-) ) Discounts are not only available from Volvo dealers but also many of the independant parts suppliers etc. as well as a wealth of information and specialist help/tools etc. from the club itself.

There are various opinions on whether the water pump should also be replaced at timing belt replacement. IMO purely as a risk assessment, if you don't replace it and it seizes (been known to happen) then the engine damage that ensues ('cos the timing belt is shredded) makes the cost of a water pump seem insignificant. If you are replacing the water pump, go for a genuine part - other people have reported very short lives of pattern pumps.

The water pump is recommended on the Audi A6 tdi as well. Can anyone confirm what differences there are between the Audi and Volvo engines ? The local Volvo dealer implied that volvo made some changes to the audi design ?

Check the Volvo part number, go down to the VW garage. Without telling them what the part is ask them to tell you what part they think it is. I know the aux belt pully is is the same, maybe this is.

Do I take it that parts are cheaper from VW/Audi then ?

I have the VW/Audi factory parts data (thanks to my Brother), the same software that the Audi dealers run. Is it worth posting a list of VW parts numbers ?

It looks as if audi used the 5cylinder engine til 1997, then model year 98 on is the 6 cylinder.

for a 97 A6 2.5 5 cylinder diesel the toothed belt is 074 109 119 R
'tensioning roller oil pump' is 074 109 243 R

Does that mean anything to anyone ? The letter at the end is usually a sequence number implying improved changed designm or variant of a part (sometimes means colour for example)

A quick look gives me two different enine types for the audi AAt & AEL I would need to see my bro to get him to explain what the difference is.

I really need to get hold of a copy of the VADIS disk, someone in the states had one for sale for $50 - i will try and track it down.

Meanwhile, if anyone has the part number form a belt / tensioner I can look it up and see what Etka says.
