Before we get a bit too carried away with what started out as a bit of a joke, the gunk is no more carcinogenic than used oil drained from the engine or black smoke from the exhaust.

You'd have to be taking daily baths in the stuff or eating it, for it to have any effect at all ... and if you ate it, poisoning not cancer would be your main concern.

It's not dangerous on skin contact, so quit beating up on yourselves about it.

I still can't believe my joke about EGR sludge-disposal specialists was taken seriously!

I guess you mean my comment. Well, from looking at the two different pictures, the 185 has a bit (lot?) more pipework to remove etc.

An 04 D5 (image found on this website, I hope the owner doesn't mind me using their image. Let me know if it's a problem):

Now I'm not an engineer, so I don't feel comfortable disturbing those metal pipes. Pound to a pinch of something, I'd get a HP leak that would costs a fortune to repair

You could take off the air pipes and have a look. Maybe get your chimneysweep to clean it in situ ?

My pipes seem to be welded to each other, as well as the jubilee clips. I couldn't get them to shift at all

Sounds like they've never been off which is usually a good thing. At least you know that they've not been fiddled with.

I can suggest one way of getting them off but I could then be to blame for damaging your car and I would never do it.

Just give them a damn good tug

I have the same setup as you and undid clips (lower top one is difficult - it points the wrong way), and found almost nothing. You have to pull the rubber collar down the ridgid pipe until clear of the top of the plastic pipe. A little bit of oil and almost no gunk. (60K miles). Mabe the new electronic controlled EGR is better or I am just lucky.
