Firet, second and more impressions
right... 8 years on... I am bored and I have not been here for years....so I thought it was time to right the impression like people who buy a new car and are amazed they did 300 miles trouble free and how impressive the new car is.
bought the D5 Xc90 auto in 2010. Drivethedeal. $12k off. Some extra like sunroof... cost nett: £28k including VAT at 15%! At the time, the 2 year old model was on more money used and had a stupid £485 road tax thanks to Mr Brown new ecological drive (nothing to do with money grabbing of course). now about 120k miles. What went wrong? Not much. An inter-cooler pipe (£300), a rear wiper (£300) and the front seats are in terrible state... Volvo wanted... yes, you guessed £300 each. We did not as we know they would last 4 years only... (we would have to redo them again right now!) All very known faults... Apart from that, oil change / filter every year, gearbox oil @ 100k, cambelt @ 90k. A lot of tires... does not matter if I do a tracking every year, it will eat tyres uniformly... economy... average never reset sits at 28 mpg. Mix of B roads, and town driving. Dropped Volvo service @ 4 years old... gave the car and an idiot @ 3 years old did not put the oil gauge properly... oil everywhere... at 4 years old.. the car was not wash... I did not care but it was in the "3 promises"... so I asked them if the first one (car serviced properly) has been done... as someone who does not as promised promise 3 cannot be trusted to have done the 2 others... Overall... good reliability... good family car... not great service from dealer network... replacement in mind? None... will see how far it goes... and could not see anything as suitable for us... For example... what to replace it with if it goes wrong tomorrow? The XC90 new model is not its replacement... Mark I was a clever, stylish family car .. the new one is for yuppies wanted to show off they have money ... a bit like the range rover cousins. Not sure... If new... I wish Volvo was resurrecting the 240 GL... like VW did with the beetle... kept it simple and reasonable in cost... not connected car ****... no digital dash crap... no sensus reboot rubbish... just a good reliable car to go from A to B. A car... not a windows computer surrounded by 4 wheels. No electric battery which will be dead in 7 years and will cost £20k to replace. in absence of this... a dacia duster will pb do as we will pb not need the space... unless we find a good last model xc90 mark 1.... with sunroof. |

Great read, thanks for the insight and sobbering analysis of the older version versus its upgraded, indirect replacement.

These cars have a lot of technology on board plus are heavy so there is bound to be a lot of maintenance but sounds like reggie did very well
To my mind this is only going to get a LOT worse as cars are loaded with more technology - newer cars now with sensors to provide intelligent cruise and stopping need to be calibrated as insurance requirement, which can only be done at main dealers currently. The result is many cars with lots life left are being scrapped as too expensive to repair - not sure how this is helping the environment?? BTW - our Tv needed rebooting as had a firmware update which we did not know about; is now unreliable as every so often needs a soft reset to work! Looking forward to self drive LOL!! |

I bought a cheap £50 DVD player for an elderly relative, mainly because she wanted to access the catch-up channels. When installed it took 40 mins to download updated before it could be used....

It is even worse than I thought. Just reading XC60 owners issues with sensus reboot and all sort of bugs put me off a new car anyway. Why on earth one would spend 40 grand for the type of experience is beyond me. Might get myself a mint if expensive 240gl ;-) |
