Default Query - calibrate clutch pedal position sensor?

Hi folks,

Sorry if this has been covered before but a brief search didn't find it.

My respected indy mechanic is telling me I need a new clutch pedal position sensor, and I'm getting a brand X one for us, on its way. (Car not with me at the moment, in his garage for MOT and other bits, so I can't go check).

Looking through this forum and other stuff on t'Internet, people sometimes seem to fix the old sensor by soldering in an extra resistance to keep the overall resistance in range, and sometimes complain that the new sensor fails after a fairly short time. I'll try to keep the old sensor in case it's needed again.

I looked but haven't seen any mention here about a sensor calibration process described by IPDUSA at https://www.ipdusa.com/products/1024...-Volvo-9472979 - scroll down there for description, brief quote is -

"Additional Technical Information
"This is a precision analog sensor: a potentiometer relying on X resistance in ohms at Y pedal position for the ECU to sense when and how quickly the clutch is being depressed so it can back off fuel and ignition at a matching rate for a smooth shift. Therefore, when replacing the sensor, it's important to calibrate it after installation:

1 Starting with the car off, turn the key to key position II but don't start the car
2 Fully depress the clutch pedal over about a second
3 With the clutch pedal still depressed, shift in to 1st gear, then start the car
4 While still holding the clutch pedal in, press the Cruise Control button to turn it on, then shift in to Neutral
5 Gradually release the clutch pedal over about a second
6 Turn off Cruise Control

"About Genuine Volvo
"Everything IPD supplies under the "Genuine Volvo" designation are the factory original Volvo parts..."

This calibration sounds harmless enough to do though I've never used Cruise Control (manual cars for manual old drivers). I'll give it a go. Does anyone more knowledgeable know whether this calibration process is genuine or have any risks? Would new sensors seem to go bad after some time if the calibration isn't done?
