Default Oil Leak Smoke Overheating Help!!

Hi, I wonder if anybody can give me any guidance.

I have a 2002 volvo V70 2.4, under hard acceleration I would get smoke coming from the engine, I beleive from an oil leak that is subsequently burning on the exhaust. As I cannot afford to have this repaired at the moment I tried some 'Stop leak,' unfortunately since adding this, as soon as I put the key in the ignition when the car is completly cold the temp gauge goes straight to hot and a message comes up saying its too hot. What should I do? Please can you help?
