Default 2.5T engine reliability

Guys,

I'm looking at a 2008 V70 ph3 with the 2.5T petrol engine - 197bhp.

My previous V70s have been diesels.

Are there any known issues with the 2.5T engine ? I know there were some issues with cylinder liners on the earlier 2.5T in the ph2 V70s, eg the V70R.

Thanks

John

If it is a 2.5 light pressure turbo (LPT) then in the P2 as far as I am aware they were very reliable, I think they produced about 205 BHP. If it is the high pressure turbo then that is a different matter as I believe they could crack the liners, think they produced around 265 BHP but not sure.

I think that the LPT version was in the P3 but not the HPT version.

In terms of genuine issues, the oil filter housing diaphram can split, causing a loud whistle from the engine bay.

Other than that, the engines are very solid. If you tune them over 300bhp, the cylinder liners have been known to crack without doing the "Block mod".

The 197bhp version is detuned. later engines had 230bhp. I have the 230bhp version in my S40 T5, and at 150,000 miles the engine pulls like a train.

A remap will see around 250bhp and lots more torque.

Turbo control valves and turbo check valves/Map sensors can get tired by 100,000 miles so the car may feel a bit slower than expected, however sort those issues out and the car goes very well.

Bear in mind the fuel economy on the 197bhp 2.5T is dreadful, some say worse than the V8 in real world driving! The later 230bhp was only marginally better. Coupled with a very high tax band if a Geartronic, you may be put off. Otherwise, I can't comment on reliability but hear they are great 5 cylinder engines (and sound almost as good as a D5!)

Thanks - £555 per year road tax is well OTT.
