I’ve had this exact problem for a few months now and haven’t been able to find a cause. I know the plugs on mine are fine, I’m going to give the earth a go and see what happens.
Minibull, if you do find anything please post up. I’ve been close to buying a gallon of petrol and a box of matches with this. Johnny Kebab |

I had a look at the problem this morning and found if I moved the wires to the grey connector the tailgate would open and other functions returned, but fully closing the tailgate again would bring the faults back. Further checking traced the bad connection of a black and orange wire, is it a common earth, I dont have a wiring diagram to check?
I noticed that when the tailgate opens it pulls on the wires and moves the connector, so for now I have unclipped the grey connector from the roof to take any strain off it being pulled and will rewire it later. |

Yes, orange/black is earth. I remember that without looking at the wiring diagram.
The number plate lights going out when something else is operated is a typical example of a ground fault. |

Minibull, how did you get on, any updates? I had an auto electrician look at the plugs too and rewire the earth... and it works! The boot and all the lights now work properly. The only problem I have now is that when the boot shuts its not closing 100%. It used to close and almost wind itself in. Now its stopping as though it's just caught on the latch.
Did anyone else have this problem? Johnny Kebab |

It's two separate things, closing the gate and pulling it in the last distance. The latter also manual gates do.

Johnny Kebab, not had chance to rewire it yet but everything is still working as it should.
Is there any adjustment on the door latch/catch, all the pulling and pushing on the door may have moved it out of line. |

The two motors use the same ground. One closes the hatch, the other then pulls it into the lock and locks it.
Depending on the rear hatch adjustment, you can see the last movement being separate from the first on some cars. On other cars, it's hardly noticeable. We have two XC70, both with electrically operated tailgate. The closing process works quite different on the two. |
