Default Metal flakes in engine oil

Mornin'

Changed the oil in my partners '08 s40(1.8 petrol, 99k miles) and found some metal flakes/shavings at the bottom of the container I've drained it in(photos attached). Service history suggests last service was done @85k miles in 2018.
How bad is it? Should we try to get rid of it? Engine is not noisy and there are no metallic rattles

could be so many things. but oil in the bottom of the engine not caught by filter suggests to me maybe the big end bearings. As for keeping or getting rid, just do the maths. Its an 08 s40, that's not worth much and will be getting little mileage for the coming months. no one wll be buying and if you are in the uk you will be walking a fine line with the law keeping this issue secret on sale.

If it were me, I would run it til it goes pop and get my moneys worth. will be most cost effective in long run.

Thanks

The car wasn’t going to do a lot of miles anyway, her daily commute is about 10 miles and the odd 40 mile weekend trip. It did come cheap (£900) and to get the money’s worth was planning to keep it for about 1-2 years at the most then upgrading to something newer

If you have it, I'd have a good look inside the old oil filter, see how it is. You could put some cheap oil through the car and do another change soon, see if it's looking better. You want as much of the **** out of it as possible because it's not going to be doing the engine anygood and at worst could help the oil pick up get blocked. Incidently, it may be worth cleaning the oil pick up if you dropped the sump.

Just checked the filter and there are no particles inside. This oil was supposed to be a 'flush' anyway till everything gets back on track and I can order Volvo OE oil.

I'll drop the sump on Friday to clean it and check for any visible damage. Haven't had the chance to look under the car, are there any specific steps to take it off? What should I be aware of and what should I look at when the sump is off?

Thanks

Few of them looked spherical, the biggest one was 1mm metal shaving

I've not done it on these engines. but there will be a wealth of reaource online. its a very common 1.8 ford engine, based on a mazda design. there will be a pickup with a strainer. if the sump shows anything at all grotty. You may want to replace or clean the pick up. its quite easy on most cars. obvs you may need a new gasket and some seal before you start to take the sump off.. other than a visual inspection, not sure what else you can check with sump off.

Thanks Lockstock, will check online, I'm aware it's a ford engine and most of the reviews online say it's bulletproof ( if maintained properly obvs).

I hope I will be able to find a parts store that stocks a gasket

Will post some photos and an update

Cheers!
