This part from BobTheCab is very correct:
The roller brake tester at your local garage is a waste of time. My car was thoroughly tested by the garage when I complained and they found no fault.

My local Indy always uses a brake tester, as does the TUV Sud inspector, BUT they are only good at detecting very basic faults, like no brake fluid or missing pads!

A code reader or ABS test drive (Don't go too fast, use a road that has safe sides and no traffic etc), plus a full in the air wheels off inspection can find more serious brake system faults. Some local Merc, Porsche or BMW main stealers do have a 4 roller high speed brake and traction test set, but they charge more than replacing the main parts, so are worse than useless for non warranty applications.

The most common serious fault discovered by a real good braking system test of a V40 seems to be duff rear calipers or useless Far Eastern tyres. Only the blind miss corroded discs or worn pads.

When I had my back calipers replaced with Bosch factory Recon's AND new Conti winter tyres fitted, it made a Humungous difference to the stopping distance in the wet!
