Post Rebuild Update
Had the old oil analysed when it came due for replacement. Results well within spec (Silicon a little high but that is normal due to sealant used in rebuild, density, viscosity & especially other mineral levels good).
Lambda sensor replacement seems to have fixed that problem, no check engine light since. The crankshaft & thrust bearing issue is now more widely apparent. Googling produces numerous examples.
