hey!
hey i wonder if anyone can help?
i have just bought a 240gl estate 2.0i auto, for 100squids. i havnt got any paperwork with the car, but is in reasonably good nick for a 19yo! and with a bit of tlc a very tidy motor. I am intending to keep it...as seem to be infected big time with the volvo bug! Im just wondering if anyone can help me identify what type of autobox it has? what fluid it takes? it also has a button on the side of the lever, what does this do? is it like a winter mode? On my s70 i am supposed to check the autobox fluid with the engine running, is this the same with the 240??? Also does anyone have any reccomendations on changing/flushing the atf, i did this on my s70 and really made a difference. sorry for all the questions, but any help would be fantastic. many thanks ben

This should have an Aisin Warner or AW71 3spd auto.

Hello, welcome.
Yes, the Volvo bug... I know about that! Don't know much about 240s but I think the button next to the gearlever is to lock out the 4th (overdrive) speed for engine braking etc. (Stand to be corrected!) As for your ATF, don't know the type but I'm with you on replacing the ATF being a good idea. I'm sure others will chip in. Cheers John |

IIRC type f atf is the one.
Is the gearlever button not an overdrive? Good luck with the car

240 s have the gearlever button on the top, if it has a square button on the side the size of a small dice, it is a overdrive button.

I thought it was only overdrive on the aw72 from 16valve models, i think in this case it should be 4th gear lockout as mentioned.

hey
Wow! thankyou muchly to everyone!
have got some atf on the way, (and a haynes! lol) just one question tho, and forgive me for being a dumbass!, but when should the overdrive button be used? my s70 is the first auto i have had in 8 years of driving, and the 240box is completely different again! any help would be truly marvelous! Also should the atf be checked with the engine running? like i say thanyou for all your advice, hints and tips. This forum is a credit to everyone thats posts on it and the advice and help you give, really is second to none, it gives that little bit of hope to all, should we say 'maturing' volvos! Massive respect to you all! kind regards ben

The overdrive button is really only to change down from 4th to 3rd for say, overtaking or climing a hill without speed dropping. My 780's overdrive is like the car lunges into a different world with a lot of noise and a suprisingly amount of power. But to be honest, it's best to be left alone and let the auto box' do its job.

but paul is right it is overdrive you can use overdrive when ever you want but be warned it does use shed loads of petrol....also a bit of advice given to me on her and it works!! run it on super unleaded....does drive better....even if you do every other fill up...the 240 prefers the higher octane fuel Last edited by the alarming man; Aug 3rd, 2009 at 21:28. |
