Question Geartronic - will it hold the gear

When driving along the motorway if I put it from D into manual, when the time comes and I apply the throttle will it stay in gear and "ride the torque" or will it change down as in auto mode?.

Also when I've put in manual it sounds like its changing gear but the display stays at 5

Any help appreciated.

Steve.

With the geartronic if you have it in the manual side then it should hold the gear that it is in however, if you are going too slow for the gear then it will automatically change down but it will not change up.

If your going along the road at say 40mph and then move the gear stick across to manual the display will probably show 4th or 5th. If you knock the lever down so you are travelling at 40mph in 3rd then the car will stay in 3rd and will not change up into 4th but if you come to a junction and stop then it will automatically change down to 1st. It will then stay in 1st until you knock it up a gear. I find that sometimes if I've moved it across to manual it will be in a sort of half gear (4.5) although it shows 5 on the display. If i lift my foot off the accelerator you can feel the box change up and the revs drop and it still shows 5.

HTH,

Geartronic will change up automatically in manual mode when you hit the red line on the rev counter. It won't let you engage a lower gear if it would mean exceeding the rev limit for that gear.

I think possibly the 1/2 gear is actually the torque converter lock-up disengaging?

If you don't select the correct gear in geartronic mode it can actually give poorer performance than auto mode. As well as changing down gears you can actually hold a higher gear longer than auto mode would which can make the car seem quite flat in performance. On the flip side you can drive to the red line through the box. You didn't mention what engine, but on a T5 this is quite impressive 0-60 with one gear-change!!!

My 2005 s60 d5 does not change up when hitting the red line but does change down as needed (in manual mode). Can some one confirm if it should change up when red lining or is this maybe a fault? Thanks

Must admit I had not taken the rev counter to the limit so perhaps it does change up when reaching the limit to save the box from harm? It would make a sense in a way.

I think I'll give it a little try next time there is an appropriate section of road. Obviously I'm not used to taking it to the extreme limit but i very much do enjoy taking third gear in manual mode up towards that red line. Will let you know of my findings but at the moment i've not had mine change up automatically in manual mode in any gear. I have forgot I'm in manual mode a couple of times and found myself come to a junction where the box will drop to first then when you pull away and the engine starts to make that lovely music then I realise it is in manual and have to knock it up a gear.

I would suggest to any new geartronic owners to really get to grips with the manual side of the box and once mstered it is a real joy to use. It is also essential for winter driving if there are any steep hills involved, you can hold a low gear and get some engine braking thus maintaining good descent control.

Might depend on the year, but in manual mode mine doesn't change gear when hitting the red line, nor did any that I test drove before driving!
