....GEARBOX OIL FILLER? I have a Haynes manual and it says to remove the engine spolashgaurd, but crucially does not say where this is or what it looks like! I have a Volvo 440 Si 1992 model.

Thanks, stu

Default Gearbox Filler Plug

What a difference a 'T' makes!!! (Cue for a song!)
Mines an auto box so I don't know from experience but having checked my Haynes (no.1691), there is reference to it on page 1.16 item 17. Apparently the plug is on the front facing side. The splashguard referred to is the plastic type moulding under the engine. It's removed for access. Hope that helps. Cheers Sarumboy

If it's automatic you fill it through the gearbox dipstick hole. If it's a manual gearbox you need to put the car on ramps or jack it up and use an axle stand to support it. The splashguard is a plastic cover underneath the engine. This may or may not be present, as sometimes they are left off by previous owners, or the damn thing drops off with old age.

As you look at the front of the car the gearbox is fastened to the right hand side of the engine. Filler plug is at the edge of the box near where the driveshaft comes out of the gearbox.
