Steering issue

Just purchased a 2010 r design
The steering when I first start the car seems to have a fair amount of play on it and a slight knock if turning side to side. The powere steering pump when turning at low speed is also pretty noisy. Is this normal. Could it be steering rack?? I have warranty on the car (although very basic) but the garage is a 150mile round trip. Trying to save face and see if that's generic before a long trip to embarrass myself!
