I did actually mean with the engine on tick over and putting the car in reverse but with your foot on the clutch Dave. I well remember years ago I couldn't get the reversing light to work when testing it pre-MOT. It's actually a while since I last checked them and I can't actually remember the minutia of the sequence!! Maybe you just need the ignition on ... who really cares

It was a bit tongue in cheek Bob, he can't be at the back of the car testing the feed and/or bulb operation and inside with his foot on the clutch. Having the engine running is a valid point as the extra voltage from the alternator may well overcome a dubious earth, however they should work without it.

..... you should see the length of my wire/s .... on my test lamp!! I can hang it round my neck with my engine running whilst at the same time keeping my foot on disengage!! It a bit of a sweat these days though! You can see I have nothing better to do at the moment.

You could slip the car in reverse and have it on second position on the ignition without the car running that should work to test ok if that makes sense .

Kind regards

Makes perfect sense - if you read the last few posts i think you'll see it was a bit of banter.

Great stuff Mark - maybe treat it to a nice pair of LED bulbs so you can see who you're reversing over in the dark?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2Pcs-LED-...w/153272262678

I've just upgraded to those from some other good LEDs that had decided after 6 years to start flickering on one segment which didn't effect the light output greatly but was intensely annoying while reversing at night!

These in general are brighter and whiter although i've yet to "night test" them properly.

I've just bought two standard Osram's Dave so the led's can wait. I gave a couple of people in the office car park a fright the other week so good to get it fixed

Even with working reversing lights, that's still very possible! Thanks largely to the new breed of people known as "Zomboids" - Android Zombies or people who are glued to their smartphones ignoring the world around them.

Zomboid came about when i tried to yell "Get out of the way, Android Zombie!" at some idiot who richly deserved it but it came out as "Get out the f88888ng way, Zomboid!"

Daytime, day running lights on and working including dim-dip headlights and the gormless Zomboid still didn't see me!
