When you refit the sensors, smear the outsides of the sensor bodies (but not the tips) in Vaselin or a similar waterproof grease to protect the inside of the holes they live in so if and when you need to remove the sensors, they'll pop out easily.

Thanks Mark - you see the blue 740GLE in my Avatar - the front ABS sensors will come out easily on that if needs be!

Perhaps you shouldn't have told me that Dave as I'll be needing two fairly soon

Correction, I think.

I’m preparing to have a go at the FOS again when I give the front brakes calipers/pads their annual clean & lubricate. To this end I took the car to my friendly local tyre fitter who has a powerful impact wrench to ask him to loosen that FT hub nut. His “Makita” made short work of that nut. It took him longer to stop what he was doing and walk to my car than it did to loosen the nut, which I torqued up again to drive home. I haven’t got the hub off yet, but a close examination of the back plate securing bolts on that side seems to confirm that they are normal hex head flange screws. I hope to start the job tomorrow, weather permitting. Just for the record, I completely agree with Dave’s suggestions re cleaning out the ABS sensor hole and lubricating it. When I had to replace the defective FOS sensor I had to destroy it to get it out. I did as Dave has suggested when fitting the replacement. Last edited by Ian21401; Aug 16th, 2019 at 20:23. Didn't fancy ever having to do that again hence the idea to enlarge, polish and protect the hole with grease before the new ones went in!
