Default Rear washer fault

Is the tailgate washer pump/motor prone to failure and what's involved in replacing it? My wiper circuits work but the washer doesn't.
See car details below.

presume that when you say your wiper circuts work that the rear motor that drives the wiper arm functions fine. If its a lack of spray onto the rear glass, then check that the line under the rear boot covers beside the spare wheel (RHS - the smaller part you can remove) isn't blocked at the filter.

Alternatively, no harm in checking that the eyelet in the rear washer on the glass isnt full of grime with careful cleaning out with a needle.

I can't hear the pump running (assuming it's under the bonnet or behind the front bumper). This is what prompts me to suspect it's failed or seized.

Although everyone argued with me last time, on both my 850 and V70 the washer pump for the rear window sits in the top of the washer tank. you should be able to see it, or at least the connector on top of it. To remove it just pull out the filler neck then pull the pump out. Its just a push fitting into the tank. I would advise taking a picture of its orientation before removing to make fitting the new one back in easier. Its a bit fiddly but easy enough. Did it on mine outside the scrapyard without any tool.

As a total newbie to V70s, is it the same tank as the front washers or is there a separate tank somewhere else for the rear washers?

It is the same tank that covers front and rear, the rear pump sits higher in the tank so once the fluid level drops the rear stops working, although you should be able to hear the pump running with ignition on without the engine running and the rear wash switch pressed. The tank is under the filler tube and the motors are in this area - Mike

It would be worth checking the fuse; it will blow if you try to wash the window when the washer fluid is frozen. The pump has a different fuse from the wiper so the wiper will still work when the washer doesn't.
I don't have the handbook to hand, so cannot tell you what fuse it is, but the diagram on the lid of the box should tell you.

With mine I had to resort to stripping the tailgate trim to remove the spray jet so I could clean it out. Since then it's worked fine.

By lying on my back and looking upward behind the front bumper (driver's side) I can see the pump for the front washers but I can't see another pump anywhere near it, and the filler neck under the bonnet disappears into the bowels without any clue if there's another pump down there.

I can only assume Steve that you have hands and fingers like E.T.
I had to remove the bracket with the bonnet release catch and both cables just to get my mitt in. Spot on with the location though, although at first glance it's almost invisible. With hindsight I'd have used a set of extra-long-nosed pliers and done it from the top. It seems to go back in only one way, but has to be inserted then rotated to find it's place before you can push it home.

I need to source a replacement pump now as mine's seized solid. Are there independent parts suppliers (cheaper than Volvo) where this stuff can be bought? My local factors doesn't list a rear washer pump, only the front one.
