Is the prop shaft to the rear wheels fitted or has it been removed by a previous owner? - Mike

What year is the car?
More than likely the angle gear / viscous coupling have failed. |

The AWD system on the early cars isn't monitored by any sensors, so there will be no lights or indications of a failure - other than the obvious - no drive to the rear axle.

Get the car up on ramps and off it's wheels. Turn the propshaft going to the back axle by hand, and if the front wheels turn the angle gear is OK. If they don't then it's duff and you might find expensive to fix
If you're lucky, and I don't think many are, then it's just the splined bush in the angle gear to gearbox coupling. More often the shaft(s) are damaged as well as the bush and then it starts to get expensive (unfortunately there's no way to know until you have it pulled apart) At that point, with an S reg car, I'd start ringing breakers. Volvo will want well over £1k depending on what's gone and I don't think the car would be worth much more than that (sorry) Or live with it front wheel drive only.....

When mine was AWD last winter it was great - not as good as my quattros but then I can't fit a wardrobe in them!
Since the angle gear threw it's dummy out of the pram it's nothing like as good even with the light snowfall that we had this year, in fact a couple of weeks back I came pretty close to losing it on an icy roundabout. I've got an angle gear from a '97 V70 which after 4 hours struggle I've found doesn't fit my car, so if anybody's interested..... |

I have a 98 XC and whilst it's currently not running as it should, it has in previous times been very good in the snow and ice. I believe the idea is that the viscous takes a little while to warm and as such from normal running there can be a slight delay before you get any action from the rear wheels.
