New springs / struts: Spring scraping seat clip? (vid)
Replaced my springs and struts. IDP sport springs on the front.
Took it for a little spin, all was well. Alignment's even pretty good feeling, will take it for an alignment soon. However - When I pulled back in the drive and into the garage I heard a clunk. No!!! I jacked up the car and was able to reproduce the issue - so I took a video of it so I don't have to keep doing it over and over: https://streamable.com/epgv3 The spring is grinding against the clip that holds the spring end to the spring seat. Where do I begin with this? Any ideas? I'm fairly certain the clip is in the correct place. I referenced an exploded diagram and photos I took of the original configuration to confirm this when I put it back together. Please advise. |

Can you drill a countersunk recess in the clip and use a bolt with a countersunk head so it sits flush with the clip?

Yeah, I could re-engineer the clip location / setting.
I've seen other people just using zip ties (nah) or other cable ties. I'm wondering though - if this clip is in the stock location, do other people have the same issue with these IDP sport springs? Or is there something else awry with my suspension. It's my first time doing this job so I'm learning as I go. |

The answer is incredibly simple and cheap. Change the socket head cap screw for a button-head cap screw.
I tried getting you a link to it but the link was stupidly long (even by ebay standards!) and to be fair, wouldn't have been that helpful as it was ebay UK and i know you're stateside somewhere. That's what you need to look for though, don't know the size, i'm guessing M8x20 - spanner size of 13mm and 6mm Allen Key to drive the screw. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/M8-M10-BU...L/253807985210 Found a link that'a sensible length! Gives you a bit more information than just a picture! With the button-head, the spring coil will simply slide over the edge of it, probably not even making any contact at all as it's only the "corner" of the scoket-head screw it catches on when you look in profile.

Hi LS!
I'm so glad to hear I don't need to take the strut towers out and readjust some error I made. I reviewed the other side and confirmed the issue exists there. I can only assume the spec location / bolts for this spring clip don't work well with the idp springs. The question is - why is this only in my case? I find no other reports of issues online otherwise. Anyway, glad it's simple. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction in regards to the hardware. Be well. PS - my son got the honor of installing that power seat I labored over to only discover the lower battery power source was my issue. It was a fun afternoon. He remembered what size socket we needed for the seat bolts! (14mm). |
