Default T5 tailpipe corrosion

Late 2007 C30 T5 with standard (and original from new) twin tailpipes
51,000 miles covered.
Visible vapour is equal from both tailpipes on cold start-up so both pipes flow freely.

Looking at the back of the car whilst crouched down behind it:
The black paint inside the right hand tailpipe is unmarked and almost like new.
The black paint inside the left hand tailpipe is pitted with the impression that the metal underneath is corroding

Normal behaviour?

I don't know how the rear box is designed internally and whether the gas flow is actually asymetric (which is what I expect since we are not talking racing car with tuned length exhaust) or not.

Never known it to corrode there. Are you sure its corrosion?

Is yours still under warranty?

Default Stainless exhaust.

You my not be contemplating replacing your exhaust in its entirety at present, but I do keep Ferrita fully stainless sports systems for the S40, V50, C30 and C70 T5s in stock....I am now close by in Chesham as of last week.

Thanks for the comment Kizzer, and the link to your shop, Don, as an option for future reference.

Puzzled that nobody else was reporting what I posted about, I decided to investigate further this evening. Inside the stone cold tailpipes and with the car parked uphill so any excess would run back out, I carefully wiped on some Wonder Wheels cleaner (essentially hydrochloric acid-based), left it for 30 seconds, rinsed off thoroughly, and repeated twice more.

What I found was that the tail pipe inners appear to be stainless steel and are not corroded after all. What I was seeing in the left hand tailpipe was a greater amount of carbon/gum than its right hand counterpart. I have no idea if this asymmetric result is normal, but it is what I found.

What I also found was that a 12" central band around the transverse rear box is much more oxidised and pitted than either side of this band (which looks "like new" so to speak), so any idea how long these systems tend to last? My father's 99k miles owned-from-new 1998 S80 2.4 and my 70k miles owned-from-new 2003 V70 2.4T still have all-original exhaust systems (bar the central hanger on mine which now has the clamp-on repair kit instead)

Cheers,
