My only input would be to check the rear calipers... All my 3 Volvos and my brothers so 4 in total are/have had caliper rebuilds..

That would depend on if you are going to be doing the work or paying a garage todo it all?

There's no magic involved, it's just a machine. Any job, even complex operations, are successfull when the correct steps are taken correctly.

In that case I would go for an all fluids and filters change+ (new thermostat), flush the coolant system out. at least then you have a good known start point for the car.

Slightly more technical would be to strip the brakes, i.e pull the sliders all out replace any dodgy rubbers make sure the sliders are all smooth, get rid of of corrosion apply a light dab of copper grease on contact points on the backs of the pads/were they touch the carriers(of course well away from the friction surface) grease the sliders with silicon grease

Give the calipers a good wire brush and a lick of paint if you fancy it.

While you are in the arches remove all the arch liners, clean out all the dirt and junk behind them.

All are not difficult jobs todo, and while you have your head in the arches gives you plenty of time to inspect everything, if things are starting to look tatty but ok for now means you can look around for replacement parts and get yourself a good deal and replace them at a convenient time.

For an older car, might be worth taking all the seats out hoovering/wet vac the carpets etc might well make it a more pleasant place to be and so on.

I included this link in another thread today, but thought it might be helpful.

This is the service kit I purchased today for my 2003, 1.8 Petrol V40.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1906560668...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

It says, it is compatible with the 1.6 model, but I would contact them first, if you do plan to purchase the kit.

Just recently bought my first Volvo - a v40 1.6i 2002. Having loads of issues with it.
1. In the engine check that the connector is connected to the solenoid - if it is not then you get a rattle in the engine - it's related to the VVT pulley.
2. Check that the fuel indicator is working correctly - mine doesn't move, then does and moves back up again. Check each time you start the car.
3. Get the engine codes read (even if there no engine light) to give you peace of mine - when my engine light came on there were 3 error codes.
4. The boot clips in the boot (that secures the boot cover) are prone to breaking - remove them by taking off the speaker covers and the two screws. Then you need to giggle the top of the panel to remove the panel from two slide in slots.

Hi Donalall, just picked up a 2003 v40 and the fuel gauge did not work. Turned out the wire to the gauge was in two pieces.

Re the Solenoid. I will have to look that up. Do you hear the rattle when the engine is running idle? I was in a car park today, stationery, and a rattling noise would appear for 20 seconds, then go, then appear. Is that similar to what you heard?
