Default Octane Requirements

The recent direction that Volvo had taken was to produce cars that require only a gasoline octane level of 87 of better, according to their owners manuals. I noticed that the 2018 model V90 Cross Country's and the new Cross Country V60's owner manuals indicate that these cars are now requiring a 91 octane or better fuel. This 91 octane fuel costs $0.60 more per gallon in the United States. This new octane requirement could be a deal-breaker if I decide to continue purchasing Volvos in the future. Note, I have been driving Volvos for the last 22+ years.

We pay on average $6.91 for a gallon of petrol. An American gallon would equate to $5.75 at the current exchange rate. How does that compare to what you currently pay per gallon?

Default 93 Octane Fuel

We are lucky in my location, in the United States, that the cost of 93 octane fuel is presently $2.97 gallon. I found it interesting, that today, the cost of 87 octane fuel is $2.27 gallon, which equates to a $0.70 upcharge for the 93 octane fuel.

I wonder how many cars see an early grave because of 87 octane fuel. At $2.97 per gallon of 93 octane you can't complain. What's the current cost of diesel over there?

As I queried in Thomas' other thread on this, is that 87 RON, PON, MON or AKI?, just as US and UK gallons don't mean the same the Octane rating at the pump doesn't mean the same either. It's not a fiddle or inferior gas/petrol it's about the method of testing.

I suspected that that was the case even before I wrote my reply earlier reply. American emissions laws are nowhere near as strict as ours, and fuel is a major money maker. This is what led me to think rather sceptically about the fuel quality being offered.

The gas used in the States is tested in a different way to European fuel, to best understand the differences do a search on Wikipedia to understand the differences.

A crude comparison is that the US rating is approximately 6 oe so digits lower than the UK numbers. This is a grossly inaccurate statement so best to read up about is on the web.

Trouble is I've now spent a couple of hours reading on the web it's my own fault, there are some things that just click my interest button and I'm off on one.

For general purposes I think your figure is close enough that it's not 'grossly inaccurate', allowing for the different test methods and that petrol is a blended product means there are a lot of variables so no one can give a scientific formula for quick comparison. It seems for petrol/gasoline RON is about 10 or 12 higher than MON, and US pumps show either PON, AKI or R+M/2, which are the average of RON and MON- so about 6 lower than the UK pump shows.

Now I really must stop and get spruced up as we're going out for lunch to celebrate my wife's birthday
