Engine stalls on the highway
Hi, I have a 2001 S40 1.8 n/a engine with automatic transmission. Today I went on a ride approx. 250km(160 miles) on a highway. After driving 200 km, the car stopped acceleration, I floored the gas but it didn't make any difference, the engine keeped revving about 500rpm. When the car finally stopped, the engine died. And won't run if I try to start it: idles rough and then stalls. It won't reacts to gas pedal, too.
The interesting thing is if I let the engine cool, it starts and everything works fine, like nothing was happened. But samething happens again after awhile. Longer I wait it to cool, longer it goes before it dies again. I have this problem for 2 years, i drove the same road every summer and car makes same thing again and again. By the way, this problem only occurs on long trips. Everything works fine on short trips. Last summer EVAP system was inspected and the rubber hose that goes to the intake from EVAP valve was replaced, other EVAP components are OK. I think it is the fuel filter, it was replaced 30k km (19k miles) ago. Do you have any ideas what could it be? I also saw something about fuel pump relay. Thanks for your help, and sorry for my bad English. |

Could be the cam position sensor or the crank position sensor (or flywheel sensor).
I don't know this engine so I can't tell you where these are. It is difficult to diagnose purely from symptoms alone. Can you get the diagnostic codes read? These sensors often fail when hot but are okay when cold but eventually they tend to give up altogether. Other than that I don't really know. Maybe a seal or pipe that becomes leaky once it warms up. A diagnostic may give more information especially if you can read the manufacturer codes and not just OBDII. Don't be too hasty just to replace any component with an error code though as the error reading could be caused by something else.

sounds like a dodgy FPR / fuel pressure regulator (assuming that yours has one). On my 2003 V40 petrol 1.9T the FPR is located at the end of the fuel rail.

About the heat, I get stuck in traffic many times, in cold and hot weather. These times engine bay gets hot as hell, but it doesn't make any problem at all Last edited by emrfaruk; Jun 27th, 2017 at 18:44. |
