Default Front wing rust - tip

I've got rust coming through the lower edge of my passenger side front wing, above the bumper. I think its a common rust spot. Its rusting from behind and coming through.

But I've found that if you remove the front indicator unit you have pretty easy access to get a hand in to treat the rust from the back of the wing.

My drivers' side wing looked fine but taking the indicator unit out to take a look revealed quite a bit of rust forming there too.

I've then used Bilt Hamber's rust converter and then cavity wax.

The top tip here is that its worth taking the indicator units out to take a look, if you've never done so before. If you've got rust then dealing with it now is likely to keep a problem at bay.

It's also REALLY easy to remove the whole wing, I recently did this due to someone pranging into me, it's only a few 10mm bolts.

And a couple of rivets for the wheel arch liner, but yeah - very easy to remove.

Can second that about wing removal. Swapped a wing over on our S70 after it had been dented. £35 for a "new" wing, and less than an hour's work to fit it. I guess it's a testament to 1990's Volvo quality that the paint match was nigh-on perfect, as was the fit of the replacement wing.

Default Replacement Wing

Hi my 1995 850 has a rust hole in the same place already discussed. When you got your "new" wing did you quote the dealer a colour number? or source it by visiting a breakers yard & matching the paint number on the VIN plate?

The dealer will only supply a new wing, unpainted. A paint shop is needed to paint it. Or those newer style spray cans and laquer are very good these days.

There is a bolt in the engine bay on 850's that is very difficult to get to amnd indeed see, because of the wiring. I ended up spending half an hour sawing off the bracket from under the wing to get mine off!

Default Replacement Wing

Thanks for that former posts said there were only 10mm-bolts to remove, I would not have been looking for that. I am trying Parts Gateway to locate a second hand wing, but no luck so far. I have seen them on Ebay used for £700!!!! Is that the going rate? My car is prob only worth £600 in it's current state. Has anybody any ideas where I might get one at a sensible price?
Cheers

Definitely not the going rate. Find one on a car being broken, often they go for as little as £30 a panel. You can get a brand new part for £200 odd..., pattern parts for just over £100 but they are pretty flexible.

As much as I hate the site, Facebook is excellent at finding breaker cars. Try VolvoTuning.net or Volvo Owners UK on Facebook.

I got our replacement S70 wing from the Volvo breaker in Kent (Tim is the gaffer there I think?) for £35 delivered. It was of course already painted the right colour, although it came off an XC70, so the plastic rubbing strip trim was black, not silver, but that was easily sorted with a spray can!

cheers all

I can see there are 7 bolts that hold it in place

But aren't there some screw fixings that hold it, where the wing drops behind the front bumper? How would you get those off without removing the bumper?
