Yes Dave, Duratec is indeed only a Ford marketing name for their recent modern petrol engines. It's confusing because it's not just one family, it covers many different types from the small I4's to the V6's. Ironically, the I5 is actually our familiar Volvo N-series white block....

That's what Wikipedia seemed to suggest - the "original" Duratec being the V6 version as fitted to Mondeo Mk1s, Mazda Xedos/6 models and the original Jag X-Type (aka Mondeo in an upmarket pretty dress - a reputation the X-Type still struggles to live down!) and because the Duratec name was so successful, Ford adopted it for all other "revamped" engines - there are even Kent and Valencia engines listed as Duratec on Wikipedia!
The Valencia is just a tweaked (by the Spaniards, hence the name) Kent OHV engine so presumably both types have been further tweaked to become Duratec!

You're sounding rather snooty there Mr. Back in 2000 when, for reasons I'll not go into, I had to choose a car from the Ford/PAG family; I test drove a Jaguar X Type and a Ford Mondeo ST24, didn't like the X Type one bit (still don't). What I did buy was a Ford (Direct) Mondeo ST24 in Electric Current Red - a fine car - prior to that I had a Ford Cougar - an emerging classic, and good one's are peanuts and well underrated.

Pretty dress, I disagree.
