Whats the Drumstick?
Hi all
Car failed the MOT last month with something to do with the Drumstick, and a windscreen chip. Got window replaces, and they replaced the drumstick and drop link on the passenger side. For a couple weeks after this I had some severe vibration on acceleration, more noticeable on motorways. I assumed it was drive shaft related, a friend who also has a garage took a look and found the new drop link was not tightened up (by a huge amount) So once tightened most of the vibration went away, there is a tiny little bit left. I thought ok so maybe now I need the tracking done, got the rears and left done but the right was seized so that needs replacing. Is this the Drumstick and track rod end were talking about? What is the drumstick? I have changed a track rod end before, so I can do that myself, but I dont know what a drumstick is, and if I would be able to change this myself or not? Volvo S60 D5 2005 185 model. |

The 'drumstick' is the inner track rod (the one that screws into the steering rack) - they really should call it by its correct name. You would need alignment after replacing this (or at least the alignment checking). Is the steering wheel off centre - that is a sign the alignment has changed.

ok, thanks
So they change this on the passenger side only, as well as the track rod end. I took it to get tracking done, and they did all but the drivers side front as it was seized. Steering wheel is perfectly centre now (was not before) and also when driving the car does not drift left or right, so I would say the drivers side is probably nearly perfect. |

For high speed vibration, you might also consider unbalanced wheels and bent rims. Loose drop link will amplify vibration from unbalanced wheels.

I think that the miss naming of parts is a sign of a poor quality garage with unqualified inexperienced mechanics almost as annoying as the nearside offside thing the UK motor industry comes out with, the rest of the world uses LH and RH even car parts are marked LH RH or even "left side" "right side" left and right never changes but offside near side does all the time, idiots |
