You're arguing with Volvo and your owner's manual not me.
That's silly.

Going by "doinitsideways"rule of thumb mine should have the green stuff in it as it has the reservoir on the offside wing.So it must at some point been changed for some reason as it has red in it,as such if it needs topping up it'll be done with dexron, which is handy as I also run a Vauxhall which uses dexron for its auto box so I've got some "in stock".

It's probably been topped up at some point with red.
Best to flush it out I think as I don't think they're really supposed to mix.

As for the whole using red in a green system, I don't know.
Can't see there being a problem as it's a simple system really, only worry would be how it may effect the seals in the rack and pump.

Personally, I don't like the later systems that use the green stuff.
The amount of racks I've seen failing on later C70s etc is crazy, but my old 850 keeps going on it's original (red system) rack. Whether there's a difference in the later racks or maybe it's down to the fluid, who knows?
Mine has a hard life, with lots of tight maneuvering, wider tyres and always has weight on board.
God knows when the fluid was last changed too!

The later models have what is called "inbuilt obsolescence"....
