Question ' Paint / Lacquer / Door cards on 700/900 ?'

Hello all experts , ha ha .

Re the 700 / 900 series cars .who knows when / what / year etc, & if models got inferior Paint / Lacquer ?

I've heard it was a swap from Volvo paint to ' GM ' because of the new demand at the time for unusual colours etc ,..& the paint & lacquer wasn't of quite the same standard from then on ? .....the older cars seem to have thicker paint ' visually at least ? '
( No offence to any newer owners, i'm still considering these cars too . )

I'm also interested to learn when the ' cut off point / beginning ' was for the door cards starting to wrinkle & distort ?? ....i've seen some nice cars affected by this , & would prefer not to have to find new doors / panels etc , if poss' ?

Thanks in advance for any information you could supply re these subjects .

Positives , Lloyd .

I think the 940 door card adhesive changed for the '95 model year, although it may have been '96. Its def one or the other though.

Regarding the paint, I suspect the difference is down to the use of water based paint, brought on by EEC regulations. This is known to be less resilient than the previous solvent based paints, particularly where resistance to bird droppings and UV degradation (fading) is concerned!

Hi Lloyd, I have a 96 940 with the dreaded wrinkly door cards !! But tbh It dosent bother me in the slightest I don't see it as that big a deal. What you get by opting for a later 9 series is probably the best of what was already a superb car! Revised rear seats with integrated booster seat, head rests that automatically retract when dropping the back seats down, if its a manual then you get the m90 gear box which is considered much better than previous models, you also will get a 2.3 as standard either with a low or high pressure turbo The list goes on but you get the picture. Don't get me wrong the earlier cars are superb in there own right but the newer ones are just that little bit more refined! Good luck with the continuing search.

My '97 door cards were all wrinkled but luckily the cards off my previous '90 model were identical so I swapped them.
The paint on my '97 car is more prone to stone damage than my previous two although otherwise is fine.
Generally it is best to go for cars with metallic paint as these don't suffer the oxidation problems as the matt painted cars.

Edit.. didn't mean to write 'matt' although lots I've seen end up with that finish especially the red ones.
