AFAIK alternators have brushes, which are the carbon contacts held by coiled springs against the commutator, and bushes, which are the cylindrical bearings in which the commutator spins.
Or do you mean the rubber mounting bushes bolting the alternator to the engine?

I've never bedded any of these in with gasket cement - I don't understand.
Sorry I should have been more explicit but I meant the rubber mounting bushes for the alternator bracket, the original are neoprene rubber and I replaced them with blue polyurethane bushes. As a stop gap I used this: https://www.boltandnut.com.au/red-hi...pro-seal.html? to bed the bushes in and once cured it stopped any play in the mounting points...

Thanks, Porkchop.

I was researching in the archive for a solution to my own 'belt squeal problem', and found your long saga with a cliffhanger. There was just a faint hope that you might bring us up to date, and we're glad you did.

Another point that you highlighted: Elbert Bos is very attentive, has an excellent command of English, and supplied me with a new engine harness five or six years ago, to replace mine whose insulation was melting away in several places after 30 years. The new harness seemed very well put together. I protect it in a sleeve of garden hose where it goes round the crankshaft and over to the ECU.

David.

No worries David I had the same experience with Elbert, it was a huge relief to get the harness sorted out as the old girl would have been stopped in her tracks without it..
