Just checked with someone at work that has a valid and up to date MOT cert. and he confirms it isnt a fail.
I can understand if they are corroded it would be a fail because it would be easy for them to foul the disk or trap dirt more than if they either werent there at all or were new ones altogether because of sharp edges and weak metal that easily bends etc

It's not a fail. I cut mine off a few years ago. They are just 'crap catchers' as far as I'm concerned. I reckon my brakes cool far better without them also. Seem to remember that one set (front/rear) is attached inboard of the hub so is a real pain to get off or refit a new one..........
