Failed MOT S40 T5
So D-day arrive and car went in for MOT and failed on couple things. Not really sure what to make of it really but if im right in thinking it looks like the CAT that might be a problem with the emissions?
Mot by Dom Hartland, on Flickr Also failed on a split boot on the drive shaft, so im guessing I just need to order a new drive shaft. Mot by Dom Hartland, on Flickr Anyone know where is good to pick up some drive shafts at a good price?

Depending on how long your CV boot has been 'open' you can mostly get away with just re-greasing and fitting a new boot, I've done it on mine, the Volvo CV boots from the dealers are £80.00 they come as a pair.
The hi CO reading is a worry, might need some further investigating, could it be the tuning map? or maybe there's a fault with the MAF or something, maybe a code read would help.

About £85 for yours. Thats the drive shaft not just the boot. I have used them in the past on my Jaguar X type and they were ok.

Yeh on that boot thing I have no idea how long it has been split for, can be anywhere under a year so most likely will have to get a new one and take the hit.

Auch, really sorry to see that emission test, I hate those fault that are non conclusive and leaves you with "what should I do" state.
My guess would go with CAT issue, especially that your map didnt create problem before (mine didnt either). Not sure if failing lambda sensor, for example, could create an issue (like sensor readout is wrong = car compensates for it?) or is that just a passive sensor. Any garages you know that can check CAT and test/inspect it?

Yep, CV boots is all you need, not a new driveshaft.
Just make sure you get decent ones or Volvo ones as cheap boots will just split again very quickly. Emissions wise, sounds like the CAT to me, good reason to upgrade to a nice 200 cell CAT as the standard is pretty restrictive in terms of flow anyway!

Unless your driveshaft is knocking/clicking you might get some more mileage with a new boot and some grease.
New and even re-conditioned shafts are bloody expensive, Ford Focus ST225 shafts will fit. The gospel is to use genuine Volvo/Ford, I've fitted "Uprated Focus ST" J&R driveshafts to my D5 and I believe the nearside one is beginning to knock after about 30 mins of driving (only noticeable at low speeds), bear in mind they have been fitted to the car for only 10 months. But J&R have a very bad reputation regards their customer service and not honouring their 2 year warranty, they insist you have their driveshafts fitted at a garage, and allegedly if you provide this as evidence they still refuse to refund/replace. Just look at their Google reviews to see some horror stories, they quite frankly couldn't care less just so long as their shifting product. For some cars their driveshafts are probably fine, but it is the aftercare and lack of support which really defines a company you want to be doing business with. Can't speak for your emissions test as I drive a derv! But doubt it's the map you're running but cats can degrade... See, you're in a dilemma you've got this K16 stage 3 hybrid to put on which requires a 3" downpipe and exhaust but come MOT time you're gonna have to put the original CAT back on for testing. Or... Visit a local tuning specialist garage that does sympathetic MOTs.

Brilliant thanks for that guys, know there is no knocking at all so will see if I can just get the CV boot repaired. Front still feels pretty good. There is a knocking thing that seems to happen every now and then on starting the car. Seem to start the car and after moving slowly there is a sort of clunk sound which is a bit odd.
anyway yeh yobbo yeh there is quite a big dilema with the K16 knocking about but I think I might just fit the cat to this then can obviously sell the whole system if I swap it out. But K16 upgrade is on the back burner now as I think I have finally decided to go forged, so need to build up funds.

discovered that "sickness" just last month, ordered those bolts just for trial-test, have them in the car since yesterday. Actually helped a bit, not eliminated it totally but did improve a lot.

Had a 200cell on my old T4 and it was fine on MOTs. A decat however you'll fail. @Domhart - you've got axle ping, common as muck on these cars. Get some high strength loctite, take the driveshaft bolt out and with a screw driver, give all the splines a good coating, torque the bolt up and don't drive the car for around 12 hours while it sets, problem solved. The XC90 bolts are bit of a myth, they work for some but for others do nothing.
