Default Door mirror mechanisms frozen

Around -1 degrees and misty here this morning in the Shropshire Hills, so quite a frosty coating on the car. I was surprised that neither door mirror turned out when I unlocked, even though I could hear the mechanisms trying. A bit later the mist cleared and the car was in bright sun; about 30 minutes after that I tried unlocking again and both mirrors turned out as norma!l.

A bit disappointing for a Swedish car! Anyone else had this problem?

It was -4 in my village in Berkshire this morning, we're in a small valley and you can see the temperature gauge rising as you drive out of it. One of mine didn't open and the other did, I guess the motors just aren't strong enough to cope with much ice, they're fine now. I can live with it as long as the motor doesn't burn out.

I always disable the auto fold when it's likely to be freezing.

On the occasions that I forget, if they don't fold out I relock the car and pour some warm water (not hot) over the hinge area and leave it a few seconds, then try again. This usually works.

The scrunching sounds the motors make when frozen isn't nice and also sounds like it could be expensive. They can usually be freed by unlocking the car and pulling the mirror out at the same time.

However, I disable the folding between November and March as a precaution.

I thought it was an ironic enough issue for a Swedish car to suffer, but I see you also have the winter pack.

Haha yeah. The heated windscreen and heated seats are good though.

I've now disabled the folding door mirrors.

I'm genuinely disappointed that they couldn't cope with a touch of frost on a slightly cold day. How on earth will the car cope in the middle of a harsh winter???

The downside of not having them folding is that it's difficult to tell whether you've locked the car or not.

The little red light on the dash gives it away up close, but I'm forever going back to check.

If the mirrors start to stick I just spray in some silicone lubricant behing the mirror and into the hinge. I have to do this every couple of years. Another thing I do is wipe the same silicone lubricant around the door seal as it stops the ice sticking them shut as well.
